I grew up in the 80’s where synths and dance grooves decorated the pop charts.
It’s quite refreshing to see that sound making a comeback. That was the inspiration for this mix.
Somehow though, I can’t get away from the amazing textures of world music, so the latter part of the CD has just that.
Overall this mix is best enjoyed at night, while driving, or at your next hootenanny.

As the magic carpet ride begins you find yourself elevated to another culture. Good music has always had the capacity to transport the listener to another place …in this case, the Middle East. The sultry melodies of that region are similar to the experience you may have at a Hookah or Shisha café (Egyptian water pipe used for smoking flavored tobacco). Arabian Nights begins with a back drop of slow classics, but soon the Tabla (Arabic for drum) arrives, and a belly dancer seduces her way into the room. The music changes quickly and the sweet smoke-filled night becomes an exotic scene of friends and dancing.

Being of Egyptian descent, I have fortunately been exposed to the richness of this ethnic culture, rhythmic beats and cafés since my youth. In fact, I have dedicated a room in our home to the Hookah. Adorned with antique Moroccan lamps, Arabian handmade carpets/pillows, and various Egyptian artifacts all under a tapestry of silks and fine linens… This is what we call: “The Shisha Room.” This compilation is dedicated to the endless relaxing nights spent smoking apple, melon and strawberry flavored Hookah… lounging the day’s troubles away to these tunes.

Fortunately, Hookah lounges are growing in popularity in the States. As westerners engage with the taste of the traditional Orient, you begin to have an intermingling of popular music. This eclectic compilation captures the marriage of our cultures. You will discover classic and popular Arabic, French, and Spanish influence …while even Hip-Hop finds it’s way into this Ancient World.

I have participated in five Mark Korsak CD Circles. My previous four offerings have fallen into the broad category of “party mix.” Two were mostly hip-hop music, one was a collection of oldies and classic rock, and one traversed numerous genres but was still “up” enough to use as background at a festive occasion. This mix is probably not a party mix, or, if it is, it’s the kind you might play near the end of the evening, when most people have gone home and a core group remains for one last beer or joint or to help with the clean-up.

I had been thinking for a while about putting together a mix grouped in couplets. I started by looking for interesting covers of songs, but as I began digging through my CD collection I decided to broaden the concept to include a few hip-hop songs and the source material for their samples. I also stuck in a remix, and even if you don’t like rap music, I urge you to listen to Track 6, Gold Digger (Katrina Remix) by the Houston-based rap group K-Otix, a few times. Their use of Kanye West’s popular beat and their frustration and anger at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina creates a remix that I think is superior to the original.

I hope you enjoy.

Back on an unseasonably warm December 1st I was traveling back to my home in Columbia, MD from Moonachie, NJ. As I hopped into the truck with a three and a half hour drive ahead of me I thought, “this is a perfect day to roll down the windows and crank up the XM Radio”. Earlier in the week I had a co-worker in my vehicle that liked country music so I put a country station on low as background music. This station was still on. I had not listened to country music since 2002 when I was stuck in Pikeville, KY for three weeks. I was forced to grow an appreciation for this genre because there were only two radio stations in town (and the other one was oldies).

Anyway, as I was driving I heard some really great songs. I started writing them down figuring this could be my next CD for the circle. I soon found myself in traffic and I started talking to myself. I almost talked myself out of it because I realized that country is a genre you have to like if you are to listen to it. Then I heard Mark Korsak’s voice in my head saying, “your last two CD’s were a bit dark”. Although both had death as the theme, they were tribute CD’s (we won’t talk about the photography). In that split second I saw ‘New Jersey Turnpike Authority’ come to life.

If you are not familiar with the NJ Turnpike let me give you one man’s view. 99.8% of the time you will hit traffic somewhere along your trip, predominantly between exits 6 and 8A and most points north of exits 14A – B & C. This is because New Jersey drivers are crazy. If you think you are driving fast at 80 MPH there are 20 cars and 3 tractor-trailers ready to push you off the road. The state could make this roadway 10 lanes wide and it would not make a difference. Not to mention excessive tollbooths, summer shore traffic, Giant Stadium traffic, inadequate signs and not being able to make a left turn add to the hysteria.

So, if your ever sitting in endless traffic staring at brake lights for as far as you can see just pop ‘New Jersey Turnpike Authority” into your CD player and enjoy the ride.

37 Times Around the Sun

I’d rather not start this, my 37th journey around the sun, on a depressing note, but my 36th trip had an unfortunate occurrence that in a round about way has served as inspiration for the cd you now hold in your hands. What was this unfortunate event? The patriarchal Korsak, my father, passed away. As depressing as that is fear not. All is well, and you’ll be glad to know that the music on this cd does not reflect the sadness that accompanies the death of a parent. Rather, it Rocks. It Rocks hard and it Rocks well. For this cd is a compilation inspired by the mascots, mantra, medallions and childhood heroes whom I channeled to get me through the most difficult eight months of my life.

It begins with Evel Kneivel. The death defying daredevil who jumped motorcycles over fountains at Caesars Palace and rocket cars over the Snake River Canyon in the 70’s. Borne out of the tough-guy, gear-head spirit of the 1950’s, Evel is the kind of maverick long gone from today’s lexicon (even though he’s still alive). He stands as an example that people really can do anything.

Then there is the reconstructed astronaut turned special operative, Steve Austin. The famed Six Million Dollar Man. If there is only one thing that can be taken away from Col. Austin it’s that at the heart of every tragic event there rests the power to transform. The power to change a person into something more than they were before. Something better. Stronger. Faster. Although, now that I have some idea of what serious medical bills are like I’m not sure that 6 million would cover Steve’s ongoing expenses in today’s market. But that’s another story entirely.

Last is another astronaut, only this one is out of his time. Captain William “Buck” Rogers. Having been gone for a long period Rogers returns to a dramatically different Earth than the one he left behind. In the television series Buck sets about reacquainting himself with a changed world in a tougue-in-cheek, disco-space-future filled with spandex and one-liners, and finding his place in it.

Each of these heroes, factual or fictional, in some way shape or form, made my 36th trip around the sun a little easier to deal with. As for my Dad, well, we can all meet someday to listen to some music and play a game of Texas Hold’Em in the great casino in the sky.

Bon Voyage!

Greetings Fellow Space Cowboys and Gangsters of Love,

I'm happy to announce the formation of the newest
incarnation that's sweeping the nation: Cd Circle 6.0

Here is a list of participants and their assigned
months:

January - Mark Korsak
February - Matthew Dubovick
March - Jeremy Sullivan
April - Angeliki Jackson
May - Simon Shaw
June - Dan Dos Santos
July - Adam Williams
August - Dan Cunitz
September - Rachel Davies

It's a full boat and I trust you are all happy with
your assignments. If there are any problems let me
know ASAP so I can make the necessary changes.

My cd has hit the mailbox and as
always when you receive it the package will include
not only the cd, but a list of participants and a set
of mailing labels so you won't have to worry about all
those pesky addresses when your time comes.

Most of you have never met and we've got an eclectic
group of interesting folk from all over the world
representing New York, Maryland, Connecticut,
Colorado, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington DC, Japan
and New Zealand. This circle is lousy with teachers
(3) and their administrative ilk (2). None of which
are in the same school. There is an accountant, a
bother and sister, 2 DJ's, a musician, 3 illustrators,
a designer and one museum director. A comic book
loving screenwriter, a Ph.D student or 2 and 3
Michael's. Our memberships age range is somewhere
around 28-60 and we have 16 participants all together.
That means you'll have to mail a few extra cd's each
month.

A heads up, If anyone is having problems with their cd
let me know. Having done this for a few years I know
some tricks that might make things easier.

I'm looking forward to a great year filled with tons
of music to sooth the savage beast within.

Let's all get in there and spin.

Cheers,

Mark Korsak
